Let’s make this as easy as possible…

I’m a hassle-free kinda gal, and I’d rather tell you everything up front so there are no surprises!

If you have any questions, you can always e-mail me.

Here’s the deal: I have flat-rate hourly price of $150, with no gratuity.

There’s no price difference based on gender, hair type, cut or color. There’s no add-on charges for conditioning or clarifying treatments, toners or styling. And I am tip-free, so mentally subtract about 20% if you’re comparing to your previous tipped services!

How much you are charged depends on how much time it takes to do your service. You’ll know up-front what your session will cost, and we have a seamless check-out so you don’t need to worry about bringing cash or doing some weird Venmo thing at the end.

  • The main reason is to raise the professionalism of our industry. You don’t tip your accountant or teacher, and hairstylists are also trained, licensed professionals.

The second reason is to remove awkwardness for you, the client. Wondering how much to tip, if it will create resentment if you don’t tip enough, etc. My hourly rate sets my income level, and I don’t expect any more or less.

Thirdly, the tradition of tipping is rooted in racism and power imbalances. (This doesn’t mean I support not tipping people who depend on that income, just that I am grateful to be able to opt out at this point in my career. )

So I don’t accept tips, really! My hourly rate is set, so you can budget accordingly.

How much time should I book?

I like to book one-and-a-half hours for all new client haircuts ($225), to give me enough time to get to know you and your hair so we are not rushed. After that, I’ll let you know how much time to book for future sessions.

For color, I work efficiently and don’t want you to have to spend more time than you need to in the chair. Most dimensional highlights with a trim are about 3-4 hours ($450-600), although new highlights or big changes can go up to 5 hours ($750.) Remember, there is no gratuity or add-ons to these prices.

I always want my clients to feel they are getting full value for their time with me, however if this pricing doesn’t fit with your budget please reach out to Creature of Habit because we have excellent stylists at a wide range of price points!

I also offer some “Pay What You Can” services for those who are disadvantaged or experiencing hardship (particularly trans folk and targeted immigrant populations.) If you are interested in these services, or know of someone who might be, please e-mail me.

If you are doing a brand new color service, or just aren’t sure how much time to book, please book a free virtual consultation.
